Screens and Grilles for your Doors

Macarthur Home Improvements | Screens and Grilles for Entry Doors

Having security and flexibility is important for your home. It is your haven and you need to make sure you install the right screens or grille for your doors.

You’d think that a screen is a screen, or a grille is a grille, but it isn’t and there are many factors to consider ensuring you make the right decision for your needs.

Generally, screen doors are installed at front entryways, and rear sliding doors to the outside, due to our Australian climate. It allows air to flow through the home but keeps the bugs out!

There is more to that though because there are screens and grilles that can:

  • add extra security, and
  • allows pets to scratch without ruining the screen.

Types of Screens

Here is a list of all different types of screens we supply (and can install) for doors and windows:

Fibreglass Mesh

Macarthur Home Improvements | Fibreglass

Fibreglass Mesh is the “standard” mesh for your windows and doors.

Fibreglass mesh is charcoal in colour, lightweight and the most inexpensive mesh option. It also allows more airflow than other alternatives.

Also, when you’re building a home and the builder is “including window and door screens”, this is the most likely mesh they’ll use.

Aluminium Mesh

Macarthur Home Improvements | Aluminium Screen Mesh

Aluminium insect mesh screened windows are non-flammable and fire resistant; an option for homes that require BAL approval during construction.

The aluminium insect screen complies with AS3959BAL-12.5BAL-19 and BAL-29; allows good visibility and keeps insects out!

Midgee (Sandfly) Mesh

Macarthur Home Improvements | Midgee Mesh Screen

The Midgee Mesh, aka Sandfly Mesh, screen has been created to keep out the miniscule insects, think fruit flies and sand flies. Rural, farming and coastal properties are more prone to tiny insects, smaller than a fly/mosquito.

The Midgee mesh is constructed from durable 0.25mm diameter PVC coated fibreglass strands which are woven closer together than the regular fly mesh at 18 x 30 strands per inch.

Midgee mesh is commonly used in rural areas and farms, as well as used in caravans and tents.

Pet Mesh Plus

Macarthur Home Improvements | Pet Mesh Plus Screen

The Pet Mesh Plus is very durable as it has a high resistance to scratches by dogs/cats.

The mesh is 20 times stronger than standard fibreglass mesh, made with fibreglass weave with PVC coating and is ideal for high traffic areas with pets and children.

It can be used on a fly screen frame, or security doors and grilles.

Paw Proof Mesh

Macarthur Home Improvements | Paw Proof Pet Mesh

The Paw Proof Pet Mesh insect screen is like Pet Mesh Plus but with a thicker weave and slightly stronger, meaning you would only use paw proof mesh for doors or grilles, not flyscreen frames.

Just like Pet Mesh Plus, Paw Proof Mesh will not rust, rot or corrode.

Stainless Steel Mesh

Macarthur Home Improvements | Stainless Steel Mesh Screen

The Stainless-Steel insect screen is really good for visibility, airflow, durability and aesthetics. The mesh consists of marine-grade 316 stainless steel.

Stainless Steel mesh is the most durable, is non-flammable and is fire resistant, suitable for bushfire prone areas requiring BAL40 compliance.

Note: for all homes constructed within a BAL-compliant area; check with your local council and/or builder if aluminium mesh will meet compliance as it is cheaper, and it looks better.
